An Introduction

Jamtara College, Jamtara is the hub of education for the students from Jharkhand and West Bengal due to its geographical position at the border of the said two states. Particularly it caters to fulfilling the ambition of those who opt for science at graduation level. Students throng upon this institution from long distance falling within radius of 50 kms.

The college started its journey with sincere effort of few responsible and dedicated citizens of the subdivision Jamtara with the district headquarter at Dumka in the year 1961. Undaunted by existing deficient resources, they started this college in a very small private house and for some years it was also run in the JBC School, Jamtara.

Finally the continuous effort of such dedicated people the college got its own building donated by legal heirs of Hetampur Estate of Burdwan district, West Bengal. The college was also recognized under section 2f and 12B of UGC and is getting financial assistance for developing infrastructure facilities.

The college got its affiliation to Bhagalpur University of undivided state of Bihar on 01.06.1967. The college became constituent on 10.12.1980 under Bhagalpur University. The existing main building along with land were registered in the name of Jamtara College on the same date. This college became a constituent unit of Sidhu Kanhu Unversity after this new University was carved out from Bhagalpur University on 10th January 1992. After division of Bihar on 15th November 2000, Jamtara College with its parent University came under administrative jurisdiction of state of Jharkhand. Later on Murmu has been added in the initial name of the University and it now read as Sido Kanhu Murmu University, Dumka, Jharkhand (S.K.M. University, Dumka).

Infrastructure & Campus

With the passage of time,the College added to its infrastructure facility as two additional buildings: Science Block Phase-I and Phase-II in order to augument science faculty and to provide better laboratory and lecture theatre. This is expected to be operational very soon. A separate Library Building has been approved by HRDD, Govt. Jharkhand and its construction will be started very soon as the related proceeding for it is in advance stage. This will be a exclusive asset to the institution as the students will get enough space in terms of reading room in order to get access to existing strength of 10,000 books in the library. Reference Books of reputed Indian and Foreign Publication are the books to reckon with. The laboratories of the college are also equipped modern equipments and chemicals by the financial assistance of UGC. The college also possesses a computer centre for general use students of college.

Besides the main campus, the college has additional land mass of 20 acre with ST Welfare Hostel and proposed B.Ed building at village, Chakri, Jamtara, 2.0 Kms away from main campus .This land was settled in favour of college in the year 19 by SDO Jamtara. The Hostel has the capacity to accommodate 100 students with huge playground to host any sports event. This privilege will prove handy in further expansion of academic and administrative realm associated with this college.

The proposed Examination Hall with dimension of 10,000 sq ft., Boys and girls common room, computer centre, vehicle and cycle parking shed with financial assistance of RUSA will further enrich existing facility of the college.
